7 First Date Conversation Topics

Spending hours finding the perfect location for your date, and spending money on the best clothes is all very well and good. But dressing to impress isn’t necessarily going to charm your date partner. When it comes to charming a woman, conversation is imperative. So that’s why it can seem frustrating when the conversation during a date is seemingly going nowhere, and you are faced with awkward stares and long periods of silence. This can often be a deal breaker, and before you know it, the date has finished and you’re left wondering what went wrong. However, there are number of things you can do to improve your conversation techniques so next time you go on a date…

1. Talking about childhood

It doesn’t matter how old you are – bonding about your childhood with your partner can always be a great conversation starter. Talk about where you came from, and the things you enjoyed during your childhood. Not only does this show that you have emotional depth, but it also gives an opportunity for your date to tell you about HER life. She will have her own childhood memories that she might want to talk about, and the flow of conversation will seem natural and balanced.

2. Talk about your passions and interests

Get to know more about your date by asking her about her interests and hobbies. You can also talk about your favorite things to do, which will help to create an emotional bond between the pair of you. This gives you both the chance to talk about something that you enjoy, and will take the edge off if either of you are nervous about the date. Steer the conversation towards her, giving her plenty of time to talk about the things she enjoys doing. You might want to ask her questions about her interests as well.

3. Talk about the situation

A great way to get to know your partner and one of the best first date conversation topics is to talk about the surroundings that you have both found yourself in, whether it’s a bar, restaurant or club. You will be able to talk about the food in a restaurant, or the people who are also in the room with you. This can help to create a relaxed atmosphere, and will open up other conversation avenues.

4. Talk about her dreams and ambitions

Whilst it’s important to tell your partner about what you do in life, be receptive and willing to listen to what she has to say about hers. Ask her what her dreams and ambitions are, and what she wants out of life. This will create an emotional depth to the conversation, and you will be able to ask her plenty of questions about where she sees herself in five or ten years for example.

5. Talk about traveling

Traveling is one of the most interesting conversations you can have with your partner, although you should sit back and let your date talk. Although the places you may have visited may sound impressive – especially if you have traveled around the world – don’t come across as if you are trying to show off or – even worse – trying too hard to impress her. Keep your cool and ask her about where she has traveled recently. Alternatively, you might want to ask her the places in the world that she would list to visit in the future and why.

6. Talk about life lessons

As the evening goes on, you might want to talk about something more meaningful, such as the life lessons you have learned over the years. This can be a great way to create an emotional rapport with your partner, and will give her an opportunity to talk about her own experiences and learning curves. Instead of just retelling an event that happened to you in the past, instead focus on the lessons that you learned. The experience could have been either positive or negative, but try and explain what you learned from it, and what you would have done differently looking back.

7. Talk about current events

Another great way to get to know someone is to ask them about their favorite TV shows, movies, or music. Alternatively, you may want to discuss a recent news story that interested you. This can be a great way to start the date before moving on to other conversation topics with more depth.
